چکیده

Experiments were conducted during three seasons to quantify the relationship between yields of late-maturing potato variety and variation in densities of second-generation larvae of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), in Connecticut and to develop alternative strategies to regular insecticide applications for maintaining commercially acceptable second-generation CPB densities. In the most extreme case, after first-generation cpa densities were reduced ~6 per stem, the second cpa generation attained a density of nearly 20 per stem without affecting yields. A pest management program, including different treatment guidelines for firstand second-generation larvae in conjunction with antifeedant fungicides, allowed full yield production without the need for any insecticide applications during the second larval generation. Antifeedant fungicides alone suppressed second-generation larvae well below densities necessary to cause yield reductions.

Resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides in field populations of the Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

BACKGROUND Neonicotinoid insecticides were first used commercially for Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] control in the United States in 1995, and since then have been critical for management of this pest. Field populations from the northeastern and midwestern United States were tested from 1998 to 2010 for susceptibility to imidacloprid and thi...

Colonization of potato fields in eastern North Carolina by Colorado potato beetle

Rotated and non-rotated commercial potato fields were sampled intensively to follow Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), colonization and subsequent oviposition patterns in the spring of 1990 and 1991. Maximum densities of colonizing adults ranged from 0 to 14,891/ha and maximum egg mass densities ranged from 0 to 48,451/ha. Crop rotation generall...

Effect of insecticide management history on emergence phenology and neonicotinoid resistance in Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Emergence phenology and fitness attributes of several Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), populations were measured under field and greenhouse conditions. Anecdotal observations by producers and pest managers in many locations of the upper Midwest increasingly suggested that select populations of Colorado potato beetle were emerging over a longer period in the spring and we...

Influence of Foliar-Applied Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis and an Early Potato Harvest on Abundance and Overwinter Survival of Colorado Potato Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in North Carolina

The effects of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis applications and early harvest of potatoes on reducing the size of overwintering Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), populations in eastern North Carolina were investigated over 3 yr. In large-plot (0.04 ha) experiments, potato beetle densities and defoliation levels in plots that were either treated with B. thuringie...

Habitat manipulation in potato affects Colorado potato beetle dispersal

The Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say); Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] is a significant pest of potatoes in North America and Eurasia and can cause severe defoliation and yield loss (Ferro 1985; Weber and Ferro 1994b). Managing the Colorado potato beetle with intensive pesticide applications has led to resistant populations (Forgash 1985; Ioannidis et al. 1991; Stewart et al. 1...
